How To Read To A Child Sims 4

The Sims 4 Parenthood comes with a new Super Parent Aspiration that revolves around the Parenting skill and raising families. It's not very difficult, though it does require you to finish raising a child who receives 3 positive Character Value traits for the final stage.

- You have to have the bookshelf open and click on the book you want to read, or have the book placed in the world and click on it there. It doesn't work just by clicking on the bookshelf.1
- That is what I am doing. I have the book placed on the table, or floor and the only options that come up are 'read *insert title' 'Put Away' and 'Put in Inventory' Not 'Read *insert title* to Child'
- Like I said, I have been able to do this action in the past, with her father actually when he was a child. It seems like with this 3rd generation of sims the action just went away. I am wondering if I have a glitch in my game, I am somewhat of a computer problem illiterate lol
- Have you tried coming out of the game and reloading? Or repairing the game (r-click game box on Origin > Repair game)?1
- If you have any mods installed into the game, you might have to remove them because some of the mods will interfere with the gameplay. Your best bet is to go with what EmmaVane said and repair the game. Or, you can follow this option: forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/835194/tutorial-how-to-restore-your-deleted-sim
- I .always put the book in adult inventory and click the read to child action there0
- The person reading and the child has to be in the same room. Weird and inconvenient I know.---> Afterlife Game Pack Idea - improved ghosts, cemeteries and funerals, psychics, new skills, new career and more! <------> Burglary Stuff Pack Idea - Burglars, alarm systems, and diamonds to steal!<---
- Repairing didn't work. I restarted my computer after repairing it. I have done everything that you have all suggested in the game still not working. I don't even know what mods are Bradyman6 lol. Ugh, I have to go to work now so I'll try repairing it again tonight or? ..Any other suggestions?
- Is the book a children's book? Try what @StilleWater suggested and put the book in your inventory then click on it. Or click on the bookshelf, buy a children's book (which goes into inventory) and read that one to the child.Check out my Gallery! Origin ID: justme22

I tried that as well. It didn't work.
@Sicasev07 MOD are modified behavior or lines of code to that change behavior or actions in game.
http://modthesims.info/ is one site where you can find a mod to use. Many people use MODs to customize Sims actions, outfits, builds, rugs. They enhance your game play in decor, animations, or actions and sometimes they fix problems that happen in game that just can't be fixed any other way .
Example:
These MODs are using the violin and guitar and making them into Renaissance instruments, just to make the story you are playing more authentic. Some do mess up your game and when updates come you have to pull the MOD folder from the Electronic Arts folder (just move to desktop) and you have to update them periodically so you have to keep track of the MODs. After you finish the EA update you just move the folder back.1- What is your relationship level with the child? Sometimes that has to be high to get it to work.1
- What is your relationship level with the child? Sometimes that has to be high to get it to work.
The child has 'good friend' status with her mother and father. The relationship bar thing is about/more than halfway with both parents and grandma (who lives with them). Do you think I need to work on the relationship more? - No that should be enough. @rosemow can help you with problems and tell you how to fix what you haven't already tried. You may have to clean your caches. Check back when you can to see if she answers.0

I've got another solution that might help you in this case.
Try uninstalling the game from Origin, and then re-install the game.
Before uninstalling The Sims 4, make sure to save your game files beforehand.
Here's how:
1) Search in your computer for 'Electronic Arts'.
Most of the time it is found in Documents.
2) Copy and Paste the folder on to the desktop.
3) Then uninstall The Sims 4!
Let me know if this works. - Hello.
Try resetting your sims 4 folder and see if that helps. To do that, move your sims 4 folder ( that is in Documents -Electronic Arts - then the sims 4 folder is there ) to the desktop. Then start the game, and a new sims 4 folder will be generated. Exit the game and then copy back the 'options.ini' and 'ReticulatedSplinesView' files and the 'saves' , 'screenshots' 'tray' 'custom music ' and 'mods' folders from the desktop sims 4 folder to the new sims 4 folder, replacing the new generated files/ folders with the old files/folders from the desktop sims 4 folder .

- I didn't even know we could read to kids in 4.
Yes you can! You can even read to a group of them at once. It is really cute. - You might check if the book is listed as a children's book or not. It didn't used to need to be a children's book but lately its the only books I get the option to read to them.Loving yourself is the most simple and complicated thing you can do for you.

Yup, that's exactly what I did. I think it's a glitch or something. I hope what Rosemow's idea will fix it. - I didn't even know we could read to kids in 4.
Yeah, it's apart of one of the family aspirations for adults, and the genius aspiration for a child. You have to read with a child for 2 hours to complete the 2nd stage, if I'm remembering correctly. - Hello.

- Oh, ok! I have to buy some kid books then first, thank you both!

It doesn't have to be out of the bookcase. I use the method I posted above all the time. The child doesn't have to be in the same room either. Just FYI.
@Serendipity38 the bookshelves come with children's books by default. They should already be in thereDissatisfied with Sims 4 and hoping for a better Sims 5 - @pepperjax1230 thank you! Yeah, I couldn't get it to work from the bookcase either, and was just coming back to ask for help again, LOL! So thank you for that!

You have to click on 'open' not 'read'Dissatisfied with Sims 4 and hoping for a better Sims 5 - The children's bookshelves give different options, I think you can actually select read from them the rest you have to open them, move out book and then click on it and select read.

You can read to them directly from the 'open' menu in the regular bookcases. I think most people are trying to find a 'read to child' from a main menu in those bookcases. I really don't know why they have the option hidden in 'open' but it's there in all the bookcases.Dissatisfied with Sims 4 and hoping for a better Sims 5 - There's not really an 'open menu' per se, so here is a step-by-step for those who are as easily confused as I am: basically you go to the bookshelf and click 'Open.' An inventory-type window (not a menu!) pops up showing all the books that are in there. Like your fridge when you 'open' it, same deal. You find a kids' book inside the bookshelf 'inventory window.' You click on it. You should get a Read to Child.. option from the book. Not the shelf.
Until they fix it, anyway.
Actually there are a lot of things you can only do by clicking on a book and not the shelf, like 'Read for reference' for writers, etc. - edited October 2014@pepperjax1230 thank you! @kremesch73 I realize that but everytime I would open the bookcase I would never get that option until I finally just stuck it on counters and tables. The children's bookshelves give different options, I think you can actually select read from them the rest you have to open them, move out book and then click on it and select read.
